5 Part Series

Describe: I see 5 photos made up of 1 main focus with the focus being a person. We used Megan Goff as out model for the 5 Part Series. In the photos, some of her body parts are farther away and some are closer up. Megan is standing right next to a tree, almost hiding behind it, with Jenga blocks all in and throughout the tree. In some of the photos, you can see a very blurry person holding a camera in the background. The objects are mostly close, nut in some photos, they're farther away to create depth. This work is figurative because we used a person and an object as our subject.

Analyze: The composition is not organized as a normal photo shoot would be like, centered, using one main subject, simple but interpretive. Instead of taking a photo of the persons whole boy, we took photos in parts. Some were far away, and some were close up. We took 5 photos, in all, of her face, her mid-section, her hand around the tree, her thigh and leg, and then her foot. There was defiantly line used in all of the photos, and a lot of texture too. These help to enhance the photos. The overall tone was mostly grey and light. The photos had a blurry background with the subject in focus, and this was done intentionally.

Interpret: The assignment was to use the idea of creating one object with 5 photos. Also to arrange the photos into an interesting composition. We needed to have at least one object stretching all throughout the our photos. Our objects were a tree and the Jenga blocks. The photos might be lighter because of the brightness from the sun. These were taken outdoors.

Judge: I feel that this project was very successful in many ways! We had fun coming up with different ideas. When we actually got to shooting, it got even better. We felt that we knew what to do and how to shoot the images we wanted in order for the photos and project to come out good. Yes the photos probably could have used a little more backs and whites to really make the photos pop, but it was a little hard to get the correct tone. Overall, this project turned out great. It was a nice way to end the school year :)

Fashion Shoot


Describe: I see a guy, as our model, dressed in a short red dress with flowery patterns on it and frilly sleeves. He is also wearing make-up. The model is close-up to the camera and the background is black. This photo is figurative because we used a person as our main subject.

Analyze: The composition of the photo is simple, the guy is centered in the photo. The background goes from lighter to darker, but doesn't take away from the main subject. Shapes include roundish shapes in the body and sleeves and lines for the outline of the dress and on the dress. The tones for the first photo in black-and-white have both bold blacks and whites in it. The colored photo has black and red tones, both light and dark. Both photos are in focus and this was done intentionally.

Interpret: The assignment was to capture a fashion shoot and create a meaning behind it. We chose to use a guy as our model and have him dress up in drag. We thought it would be really different then any normal fashion shoot so that's why we chose it. Normally when you think of fashion shoots and models, you think of beautiful women in stunning fancy dresses, but not in this case. I think both photos have the same amount of lightness and darkness in them. These photos were taken indoors.

Judge: I feel like our work was successful in a way that the colors and tones were percise and clear. The background, starting from left to right, gradually becomes darker. I also like how the photos were clear and the main person was centered. Not too much was going on in the photo. Our models' expression was mostly momotone. He looks irritated, ans I'm not sure if that was a good thing or bad for him to have that expresstion for this photo shoot. But overall, the photos were great.

Series of Photos

Describe: In our series of photos, we were assigned to tell a story. The subject matter in the first photo is a boy dressed in a black and white striped t-shirt who is holding a white balloon. Then, in the second photo, the boy is still wearing the same thing and is holding a gray balloon, but in the background appears an adult dressed in all black. The adult is facing the boy. In the last photo, the adult dressed in black is standing right beside the boy who is now wearing all black too, while still now holding a black balloon. They are both facing the camera. They both are close to the camera. These photos are figurative, because they are all literal and use people.

Analyze: In our series of photos, the main subject (the boy) was positioned in the middle of the frame, as well as the other people too. We used some elements and principles of design like line, and shape. The striped shirt represents line, and the circle balloons represent shape. We also used various tones like really light white, and then darker black. The images were all in focus and this was done intentionally.

Interpret: In these series of photos, we were assigned to tell a story. Our story has to do with a childish boy playing with a balloon, then in the distance the boy sees a man in the background facing him who is wearing all black. The man in the background represents an adult, and he looks almost mysterious. You can the infer that the adult then walks towards the boy, approaching him. In the next shot, you now see the adult and boy both wearing almost the same thing, as if his childhood days have come and gone away. Throughout the series of photos, the boy holds a balloon. In the first photo, the balloon is white, the second the balloon is gray, and in the last photo, the balloon turns black, to show progression of the boys life. These photos are were taken all outside, in a rough forest with trees in the background to create a mystical feeling.

Judge: I feel that the series of photos are successful in a way that we were able to act out our story using images. I think the contrast with the darkish background, and with the lighter objects in front, was portrayed well. The boys striped black and white shirt came out very clear, and so did the balloons. The 3 series photo leaves a sense of a cliffhanger to have the audience infer what has happened. Which I think is a good thing, and creative thing to do, so that it's not so literal. Working in groups was nice because everyone contributes with their own ideas, and we all try and put them together. The only difficult part was that some things were unclear, and the communication between all of us as we shot our models. Also, it's important to choose a model that is okay with being on camera and comfortable with it too. So we'll just know what to change for next time, and make it even better.

Window Portrait

Describe: This photo is a portrait of myself, so I am the subject matter. The foreground is of myself and the background, which you can't see very much, is of my room. This work is figurative.

Analyze: There's the use of shape in my face. There's a pretty equal amount of visual tones of whites (in my face) and blacks (in my hair) in this also. The photo was taken in focus intentionally.

Interpret: The purpose of this photo was to use the natural window light from outside, while the portrait is taken of a person inside. The sunlight helps to bring out a natural looking portrait. It also brings out the lights and darks. I'd say this image is in between light and dark.

Judge: I feel my photo was a successful portrait of myself. It really shows the different tones of whites and darks using the natural light. The mood is very fun and happy, with the smiling. If I had to change anything, I'd probably just show more of the background.

Outside Portrait

 Describe: This photo is a portrait of Armin, so the subject matter is the person. She is in the foreground, and she's standing behind two metal bars. The background is a big fence. The work is figurative because I used a person in it.

Analyze: There is definitely line in this photo. She is behind two bars to give the photo more effect. The tones are mostly light grey except for her dark hair and shirt. The image is in focus and this was done intentionally.

Interpret: This image was taken to see the difference between natural light (outside) and un-nateral light (inside). The image is more light and was taken outdoors.

Judge: I feel my portrait was successful in the sense of the person I used, and expression she's giving. I makes the audiance want to find out more about the photo. The only think I would change would be to have more darks then lightness.

Still Life

Describe: This photograph is a still life. I used a black mask with a feather, one flower lying down and the other standing up to create height. The background is plain with a grey tone and some shadows. most of the objects are close up. The two flowers are in focus while the mask is not. This photo is abstract because I arranged object around to create a still life.

Analyze: The objects are placed in a way that it balances the main concept out. The mask is in the foreground while the two flowers are in the background. One flower is placed up-right to create height, and the other flower is placed sideways. The flowers give off a very edgy shape because of all the leaves and petals, while the mask is pretty much one rectangle. Some of the photo is in focus and some is not.

Interpret: This photo was taken indoors. I think that is why it's on the darker side, because there is no natural light. We used a strobe light. I went with a theme of a mask and flower because it reminds my of a school dance I went to. It kinda gives a felling of mystery because people hide behind their masks.

Judge: I feel my work was successful in a way that I got the meaning clear and across. Even though the flowers look good in focus, I might of liked it better if the mask was in focus because it's in the forground. Also, I think I needed more white spots instead of all dark.

Portrait

Describe: Here is a portrait of a student named Ilana. It's a close up photo, her face is the main subject. She has a scarf on her left shoulder, and a design of the side of her face. The background is plain and has  many tones. This work is figurative because it's of a person.

Analyze: The work is organized with her body in the middle of the photo while her head is tilted upwards and she's looking away from the camera. I wanted her eyes to pop out, so I put a design of confetti around them. The scarf around her left shoulder gives the photo personality with the plaid design. The tone is a peaceful tone, she looks very sympathetic.

Interpret: This image has high contrast with dark shades as well as light shades. The background is a white background with a gradual shade going from dark to light starting form the top left corner. This photo was taken indoors to teach us the value of light without sun.

Judge: I feel my image was successful overall, my model was on key and I chose the right clothes for her to wear. As for the background, I feel It's very gradual, and works with the tones of her face so she doesn't blend in with the background. The only thing I would have done differently is, to show the design, I made on her face, more. I could have done that by shooting a profile view of her face and have her head turned all the way to the left.
